The basic process for writing a questionnaire is as follows:
- Identify everything that you need to measure. Typically this will be a combination of:
- Questions that you need to answer. For example, whether people are interested in buying a new product. See Information Needs and the following pages on the different types of models for more on this topic.
- Diagnostics that will help you understand the answers to your key questions. For example, reasons for liking or disliking a new product.
- Questions that will be useful for profiling. For example, age and gender.
- Questions that are useful for checking the representativeness of the study. Often these will be the same as those used for profiling. It is important to ensure that any questions that you use are structured to be comparable with any data that you wish to use to check for representativeness. For example, if the data you can check uses the age bands of 18 to 24, 25 to 34, 35 to 44, etc., then you need to ensure the questionnaire uses these same age bands.
